Quorn MK-I

"It's over, I enjoyed it, I learnt a lot and the tool is a joy to use. Would I do it again, yes certainly. There are many things that would come out better on the second one, but I don't have to. The key point is that a raw beginner can perform all the operations to build this machine on a 3-1/2" lathe (like the excellent Myford Super 7). I also used a drill press and a vertical milling slide for the Myford, but the latter is probably not mandatory." Ron Chernick, 1996

The MK-I is designed to use a Foot or Side mounted motor.

MK-I Drawings

When the Quorn MK-I was introduced in a series of articles by Professor Chaddock in Model Engineer, all the plans were contained within the articles. When these were later brought together in book form they were, naturally, retained within the book and still in book size. But if you've ever tried to hold a bound book open and do machining while viewing the pages you know the struggle involved. So we offer them enlarged and separated them from the book for ease of use.

Quorn MK-II

Many of these versatile tools have been made over a period of years and we are confident buyers of sets of parts will be most satisfied. The grinder is offered in two styles, the MK-I as described above; and the MK-II designed for Flange or Face mounted motors. The MK-II kit also contains an aluminum drive belt guard casting. We offer castings and drawings for both styles of unit.

MK-II Drawings

As with the MK-I drawings mentioned earlier, we have found that offering the plans separately is desirable. Some people feel comfortable with using the drawings included in the magazine articles or book; some want to examine the task before before spending the money on the castings; some purchased the castings at a show or "swap meet" without plans. By offering the drawings separately potential builders may save money.

Castings for the MK-I and MK-II Motor Mounts

Side by side comparison of the castings for the MK-I and MK-II motor mounts. This is the major difference in the 2 versions. The MK-I is for a Foot or Side mount motor, the MK-II is for a Face or End mount motor.  The MK-II also has the additional aluminum belt cover.

Quorn MK-I with Accessories

"I recently made this Quorn tool and cutter grinder. Purely by chance, I bought the casting set at a show. I learned some new machining, making the dials. And I enjoyed doing them. I have used it a few times now and it really is capable of sharpening all the cutters in my workshop. I amazed myself by sharpening 3/16th four flute milling cutters with no dramas. I should have had one of these years ago!" Reg Ingold, 1/27/05
