Woodworking Joinery Classes Near Portland, OR

Ready to take your woodworking to the next level? At Martin Model's workshop in Scappoose, Oregon — just 20 miles northwest of Portland — this session serves students at two stages of their woodworking journey. When you enroll, you'll work on the project that matches where you are in the program:

  • Completed Part 1? You'll build the Part 2: Hinged Tool Box
  • Already completed Part 2? You'll move on to the Part 3: Side Table

Both projects run in the same class sessions, so you'll be working alongside fellow makers at different stages — a great way to learn from each other in a supportive, inclusive environment. All genders, all ages, all backgrounds welcome.

What You'll Build

Part 2: Hinged Small Tool Box

Craft a beautiful, functional hinged box (approximately 10” x 14” x 3½”) designed to keep your delicate tools safe and organized. You'll master box joint joinery — a foundational technique every woodworker needs in their toolkit.

Part 3: Side Table

Build a stylish, heirloom-quality side table while mastering advanced joinery methods including dovetail, mortise and tenon, and lap joints. A functional piece of furniture you'll be proud to display in your home for decades.

What You'll Learn

Across both projects, you'll develop skills that separate hobbyists from true craftspeople:

  • Box joint and finger joint techniques
  • Dovetail joinery by hand and machine
  • Mortise and tenon joints
  • Miter and lap joints
  • Precision measuring and marking
  • Tool safety and advanced machine operation

Prerequisites

  • Part 2 (Hinged Box): Completion of Woodworking 101 Part 1 required
  • Part 3 (Side Table): Completion of Parts 1 and 2 required
